My name is John Whitcomb. I was born and raised in Waterville Maine, went through the Waterville
school system and moved to the Sidney area after graduation from high school.
Work has always been a part of my life, starting in high school. I’ve gone from a job in a downtown
jewelry store to my current position at Bath Iron Works as an apprentice marine electrician program
through Maine Maritime Academy. I have served on the Sidney board of selectman for 6 years, serving as
chairman three of those years.
My wife and I married in 1998, and I built the house we currently live in with our two daughters, ages 7
and 18 months. I have always believed that if you want to know where something is going, find out. That’s
one of the reasons I’m a selectman; I want to know where my tax money is going.
I enjoy woodworking and hunting, and most of November, I can be found in the woods. Working in
various jobs has made me see how things are different wherever you go--but one thing is always the same:
people don’t like to be told when they are wrong. I’m always looking for what should be done and to what
is being done. I don’t mind being proved wrong, but you’d better back up what you are saying to prove
your point!
Being a selectman has shown me a great deal of what is involved in government procedure--from building
budgets and managing personnel, to dealing with mandates and red tape. It is easier to go with the way
things have always been done, which is what most do, but in the long run, it’s much more effective to do it
the right way and make it more efficient.
